Yet again we open news with Anna Blythe. At just 18 years old Anna stormed to the Keirin final in the World Cycling Championships. Anna just missed out on a medal in coming 4th. Many congratulations Anna you look set to bring home many World Championships medals in the very near future.

Vc St Raphael are please to announce the addition of three strong riders over the past few weeks.

Jody originally came from a swimming background and competed for GB from 1994 - 2006.
Swimming Results:
2004 - Bronze at Athens Paralympic Games 100m Butterfly

1996 - Gold 100m Butterfly (WR) at Atlanta Paralympic Games

Returning to the club after ten years out of cycling is former International rider Richard Prince (pictured on the left). Richard was one of the countries top riders as a junior with a list of results as long as your arm. Richard has scored a number of top 5 placing already this season. He is looking to the National Master Championships where he is hoping to add a few medals to his large collection. "It is harder than I remember that's for sure. I am really enjoying the racing and being back in VC St Raphael is great. I received a warm welcome at Thruxton on Sunday and everyone congratulated me on the result. I look forward to racing this year and getting to know my club mates. I would especially like to thank Mick for his support in the past and over the last few weeks to get me back in the fold".

Some of Richard's past results:

Junior in 1993 and under 23 in 1994-1995
Won the following:
1993 Wessex Divisional Junior Circuit Championships
1993 National Junior Kilo Champion
1993 National Junior Pursuit Champion
1993 3000m Junior National Record achieved
1993 Gold Medal in National Junior 10mile Time Trial Championships - Team
1993 Gold Medal in National Junior 25mile Time Trial Championships - Team
1994 Bronze medal in National Kilo Track Chamionships - Seniors

Team Director , Mick Waite, remembers one of Richard's finest rides as the Bronze Medal in the National Championships, Team Pursuit in 1995. Also in the team were Andrew Mummary, Adrian Worthington and Matt Ascroft. The medal was decided by a fraction with the medal going to De Laune CC

Also joining us this year is Richards training partner Ian Cooper. Ian began competitive cycling as a schoolboy/junior in the North of England. Ian has competed as a first category rider and has a strong record, particularly on the track. Last year he won Bronze at Masters National Pursuit Championships, 3rd points and 4th in the scratch. He also got several top three placings in Open events.

The past weekend (31 March/1 April) was an excellent one for the team. At the Mountbatten Centre on Saturday the team worked superbly to 1,2,3 in the Elite race (Simon Brooks, Chester Hill, Rowan Horner) 3rd in the 3rd cat race (Matt Coates) ON Sunday at Thruxton the team and placed 5,6,7 in The Elite race(Chester Hill, Rowan Horner, Simon Brooks) and 2nd for Richard Prince in the 3rd cat race. Well done all.

Finally congratulations to Jason Streather who won his 4th Hillingdon Winter Series title a few weeks ago. Jason is someone who loves to race and does so throughout the year on the road and track. This season’s Hillingdon title went down to the wire in the face of tough opposition, mainly in the form of Danny Rudd (Citihub). It all boiled down to the final race and who to score the most points in the mass sprint to the line. Jason crashed in the last few yards, though Rudd failed to score any points. With neither rider scoring the title went to Jason. With his forth title in his pocket the pain of the crash quickly surrendered to the joy of another victory.

The Anna and Jason show…….
The Anna and Jason show…….

News start with Vc St Raphael topping the UK rankings, but more of that later…….

The past few months have been punctuated with more superb results from the fast rising track talent; Anna Blythe. Anna continued to deliver more impressive results in the Revolutions 14 at Manchester. The World Junior Champion competed in the 200m Time Trial and the Omnium, but in the senior ranks! With tough competition not just from many of the countries best track riders but some of the fastest track women from Europe the pressure was on Anna. This pressure was only increased on Anna when she was off last woman in the 200 metre Time Trial. She had to improve on Sandie Clair’s time of 12.229, which Anna managed to do with an awesome 11.590.
Next was the Omnium. Using her formidable power and sharp tactical brain Anna made it look easy by winning each of the 3 heats and thereby taking the overall. Fantastic riding Anna, well done!
Anna will be joined this year by up and coming rider; Becki Rimmington. Becki like Lance Armstrong come from a triathlete background and in a very short time has made a big impact. Already she has scored 5 Welsh track titles as well as 5 podium finishes in Criteriums. She recently visited Paul Hewitt cycles for bike fitting, the story for which can be found here:
http://www.veloriders.co.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=49478
Elisha Green was also been competing at the Revolutions 14 demonstrating his considerable sprinting power. The competition was world class and this time Elisha didn’t quite manage to get the wins which he has made a habit of over the past few months.
Malcom Cox has been as committed as ever to training over the winter and proved his fitness by coming second to professional rider Daniel Lloyd in the New Forest 10 mile time trial. Since then Malcom has unfortunately picked up an infection in his foot which will require surgery to resolve. But Malcom is not the only Vc St Raphael rider to be in the wars, new member Mike Anderson was in collision with a car which resulted in him breaking his hip. We wish both of you a speedy recovery.
One rider who never seems to want a rest over the winter is Jason Streather. Both Jason and his brother Jamie have been competing hard in the Hillingdon winter series. Jason has managed some excellent results with 5th, 4th, third, three second places and one win. Jason’s results meant that single handed he managed to propel Vc St Raphael to 1st ranking in early January on the BCF rankings.
Finally some of you may have noticed the accompanying photo of the Vc St Raphael team car. This photo was kindly supplied to us by new member Chester Hill. It features his father who was also a member of the team. The photo was taken in 1963 in Paris with Chester’s father in the centre. Chester has obviously carried on the family tradition and between studying for his PhD has managed some excellent road results to take him to first cat.
We wish all our riders a happy and successful season.

More Gold!
The past few weeks have been extremely successful for Vc St Raphael.
Anna Blythe continued to build upon her success which saw her take gold in the Junior Women's World's by taking 3 more gold medals in the National Track Championships. Anna took Gold in the 500m TT, the Junior Women's scratch and the Junior Women's Sprint.

The Club has won a clutch full of medals at the 2006 UCI/IPC Paralympic World Cycling Championships. Barney Storey has been helping Anthony Kappes to gold in the mens tandem sprint and also in the Kilo. Sarah Bailey saw success at the event when she won the pursuit, silver in the womens road race and bronze in the 500m TT.

The deluge of gold continued at the Worlds Masters Championships in Manchester. Ben Elliot took gold in the 30-34 1km TT and sprint and Dave LeGrys won the 50-54 500m TT.

Sticking with the track, Elisha Green was looking to win the sprint series, only needing a 4th place to secure it. While warming up Elisha came down and was taken to hospital. He was diagnosed with a fractured cheek bone. The race organisers kindly delayed the race so Elisha could take part, but he did not manage to get back from the hospital in time.

Simon Brooks also saw success on the track, but this time on a road bike. Simon won the final Ray Martin League, almost lapping the field in the process.

Finally congratulations to Mark Wareham who won the National Time Trial Championships Masters. Mark then went onto to win the Gloucester City 25 mile TT on the 10th September.

Well done everyone and good luck in your up and coming races!

Anna Blyth - World Champion and other successes!
Top news is the awesome riding of Anna Blyth in the Junior World Cycling Championships. Anna started well with 4th in the 500m time trial with 36.764 seconds. Anna then went on to take silver in the Women's sprint. The next day Anna went on to take Gold and the rainbow jersey in the Women's Keirin. But the race was not straight forward for Anna. In the opening rounds a Russian came down on Anna when Anna already had the racing line. The Russian was disqualified and Anna showed her calls and determination to get through to and ultimately win the final. Man, many congratulations Anna!

Sticking with the track.......... Elisha Grrene has continued to show excellent form at the National Series in Herne Hill

The first race of the day for Elite was the 500m handicap; he cruised comfortably through to the final winning his heat with ease. The final was a fantastic affair with 8 riders all riding within 20metres of each other. Elite was scratch and after the first corner started winding it up down the back straight, picking off riders one by one, he came out of the final in the lead and no one was going to come past him on his run into the finish. He recorded his first win of the day.

The National Sprinters league was the next event. Elite was seeded second from the end of the sprinters and disappointed no one, recording the fastest time of the day with 11.6 to go into the first round as favourite. Lee Povey was his next challenger with 12.23.

The first round saw Elite up against Mike McMahon and Robert Drinkwater, Mike lead out after the bell, the riders took it steady down the back straight them Elite wound it up to win and go through to the next round in a time of 12.22.

The second round was to prove to be a hard fought affair, with 3 of the top 5 sprinters in the heat, Lee Povey coming through the reps. Ryan James started the race off well, then Lee attacked after corner one, Elite was straight on his wheel, James attacked again on the back straight but Elite kicked and the lads had no reply he came in to win by a bike length at the finish.

Elite made into the final against Keith William the strong Welsh man, he took off with style and gave Elite a good run for his money, but resplendent in new colours today no one was going to stop Elite winning and he came home in first place with ease. Elite made this his first win in a national series, improving on his second place at Scunthorpe three weeks ago.

There was no chance for a breather as the final event was lining up on the boards as Elite was winding down from the sprint.

The 20km scratch race was fiercely contested by 36 riders, which was a lovely sight to see on Herne Hills white track, the sun shining and the clouds staying away. Jack Kenton Spraggon made a lone attack from the gun, but was soon swept up and reeled in. Numerous attack trying in vain but didn't get away. Then with 5 laps to go the VC St Raphael organised themselves for a perfect lead out, Elihsa shouting orders from the bunch! Jamie Streather kept the pace high,no one could come round them, he swung off for Jason to do his turn followed by a superb strong effort of Nathan Harman, Elite kicked with 200m metres to go and strongly rode the final corner to take the win with arm in the air. Great riding by the lads and win number three for Elihsa Greene – VC St Raphael, I think that is the start of more to come.

While helping Elite to win at Herne Hill, Jason Streather has been showing his class on the track with wins at the track in Newport in the 1km and Points races. Jason's wins have not only been at the track, with victory in the Ross on Wye 10 mile time trail.

Since winning an Elite race in February roadman Simon Brooks has had a quiet season, until Castle Combe on Sunday 6 August. In the E/1/2 Simon was in the action all day. Simon attacked 4 times in the last 2 laps from a group of 8 riders, eventually going clear with less than 2km to go. The gap was large by the line and he had plenty of time to enjoy his victory.

Finally Junior rider Tom Price has been showing superb form recently. With a second place to ex-pro and Senior rider Joe Bayfield at Reading Track in the 20km Scratch race. Tom then went on to 3rd place in a top event for Juniors; the Crawley 2 day. He placed 7th in the Prologue, 6th in stage 2 and 4th on stage 3, his consistent riding deservedly earning Tom a place on the podium.

Elisha “The Greene Lantern” Joins Vc St Raphael
Who is Elisha Greene?

Elisha was born October 18th 1977 and he always knew that there was something special in store for him and the sport of cycling gave him that opportunity. He began training with Noel Luces (Trinidad top coach) and it was not long before he showed promise and, more so, determination. It is that determination that made spectators recognise that he was talented and he was immediately a local favourite. For him to succeed in his sport he had to develop tremendous survival skills both on and off the bike. It is ability to make friends and win the favour of the local media that allowed him the resources to make it as far as he has today.

Just what are his achievements to date? In a local context, since 2000 he has won 25 National Championship Medals, 8 of them gold. In the regular season races he has always been a top contender and has countless victories. Elisha is the only 4 time winner of the Presidents trophy, the most prestigious award in the local calendar. In International competition hosted in Trinidad and Tobago , Elisha has always stepped up to the challenge, winning numerous medals at the Southern games. In the 5 times the Beacon sponsored West Indies vs. the Rest of the World event has been hosted in Trinidad and Tobago, Elisha has been crowned most outstanding cyclist twice and has twice been runner up.

In major international championships he has achieved one Pan Am Championship silver medal and a Central American & Caribbean bronze medal. He has also ridden for Trinidad and Tobago in the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, taking part in various track events. He now leads the ranking for the most outstanding cyclist in the Trinidad and Tobago Cycling Federation National League.

Taking into consideration his humble beginnings, these are achievements he can feel proud of. Most importantly, he has learnt the importance of winning the respect and the admiration of his fans. He likes to think that his story will inspire other young people in the Caribbean to better their lives through sport.

Elisha has a good speaking voice, a warm and enthusiastic personality and he loves cycling and people. He has worked in the promotion of cycling from the grass roots up in the Caribbean.

Elisha only arrived in the UK a few weeks ago, but has already had some top placings and ruffled a few feathers a the track!!! More top results are sure to follow. Well done Elisha and welcome to Vc St Raphael!

Photos to follow soon.......

Edgar Takes Gold, Silver and Bronze Down Under
Representing Scotland, Vc St Raphael rider Ross Edgar will return from The Commonwealth Games with a superb haul of Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals!
In his first event of The Games, Ross took Bronze in the Keirin. The following day Ross went one better with a fantastic Silver in the Men’s Sprint. But Ross saved the best to last; being part of the three man Scottish Team for the Team Sprint he took the Gold Medal. In the post race interviews Ross was almost lost for words. Many, many congratulations to you Ross.

There were two ex-Vc St Raphael riders who were also in the medals. Representing England Paul Manning claimed Gold in the Pursuit and Team Pursuit. Victoria Pendleton, also representing England, took Gold in the Women’s Sprint and Silver in the 500m TT.

More Vc St Raphael Wins!
Jason Streather continues his great form to Win the Hillingdon Winter Series. I believe that this is the third time Jason has claimed this series. Well Done Jason.
There is a great interview with Jason on the BCF website:

http://www.britishcycling.org.uk/web/site/BC/roa/News2006/20060214_Streather_Wins.asp

Not content with his road success Jason has won a number of race on the track, at Newport. Jason is not the only rider winning at Newport, Andrew Russell claiming the Welsh Masters Championship in the 10km Scratch. Chis, Jason’s Dad also claimed a number of second places at the same Championships.

Back on the road and Simon Brooks managed to take victory at the Thruxton Road Race on the 26th February. Surprising everyone, including himself, Brooks managed to outsprint breakaway partner Toby Neave. Rowan Horner, showing fantastic early season form, policed the chasing riders and then outsprinted them to take third.

Well done everyone!

Jason Tops and Tails the Year & News From Paul Rogers in NZ
Jason Streather managed to win not only the last race of 2005 he quickly followed it by winning the first of 2006!!!! Both the races were at the closed Hillingdon circuit. Jasons wins as well as high placings put him top of the Hillingdon Winter series. Having won the same series in two previous years Jason clearly has the ability to win again. Well done Jason, fantastic riding!

We have also had the following letter from Paul Rogers, someone who raced at the highest level for many years for the club:

"I rode two big bike races this year, Tour of Tahiti, 8 days long, a proper tour. came 9th GC and led masters competition from stage 1 to finish. Came 2nd overall and 1st master in race at Rotorua, out of 2000 riders and then got 3rd in a 12km run after leading for 11 km, so I can still do it. Also 17th in a triathlon, but my swimming is crap, fastest bike though. Won the area TTT champs."

Velo Club Aquila/Velo Club St Raphael Reunion
It was just over fifty years ago that a little group of Portsmouth cycling enthusiasts founded the Velo Club Aquila, a racing club affiliated to the British League of Racing Cyclists. In 1958 the club received the sponsorship of the Societe St. Raphael ( see http://www.straphael.fr/ ), a premier French aperitif manufacturer, a move which led to the club changing its name to the Velo Club St.Raphael. Today the club enjoys the sponsorship of local property development company, Waite Contracts Limited of Farlington, whose Managing Director, Mick Waite, has for the past thirtry years guided its teams to numerous national and international honours both on the road and track.

On Friday 30th September, a reunion of the original members of the club took place at Fareham, an event jointly organised by Mick Waite and Chris Wood, an official of the governing body for the sport, the Union Cycliste Internationale, now living in Canada. The founding members of the Velo Club Aquila, William and James Endruweit, Bari Hooper, Brian Riley and David Walker were present at the gathering, along with many of the original members of the Velo Club St.Raphael, including George Childs, Vic Howlett, Harry Jackson, Grahame Munden, Leo Needham and Michael Wall. Among other former prominent riders present were Michael Dowling, Peter Glasspool, Michael Lewis and John Richardson. Societe St. Raphael sent over a representative from France who was the guest of honour on the evening; M. Pierre-Andre Cousin. During the evening Monsieur Pierre-Andre presented Mick Waite with an engraved glass decanter full of their fine liqueur.

Rowan Horner Storms To South Circuit Championship Gold
Despite the presence of top national criterium rider, James Taylor, Rowan Horner soloed to the Gold medal in the South Circuit Championships on Saturday 25th June.
In typically aggressive style Horner attacked in the opening laps and was soon joined by Paul Standen (Comedy Super Team) and Mark Perry (Maestro).
Horner increased the pace and Perry was distanced. Back in the pack Taylor and the rest of the bunch were controlled by the other members of Vc St Raphael. With 3 laps to go Horner attacked Standen who fought hard to hold on, but was eventually distanced as Horner soloed to a well deserved victory on his Paul Hewitt bike.

Earlier in the Day Matt Coates managed an excellent Silver medal in the Junior Championships to add to his bronze from the Divisional Road Race he gained in May.

Waite Contracts Celebrate 30th Year Of Sponsorship
Sponsorship of top cycling clubs is very common in the UK. Typically these sponsors back a club for a few years and then disappear but Waite Contracts is in its 30th year of sponsorship for Vc St Raphael! Behind Waite Contracts is Mick Waite. Mick joined the club in 1960, when he was almost 14 years old. He became aware of the club through an older boy at school and wanted to pursue his road racing interest with a local club. Mick began sponsoring the club in 1975, taking over from Ron Stanton, a roofing contractor, who had sponsored the club from 1971 until 1973. With Mick’s backing the club has gone from strength to strength over the years. The VC St Raphael has attracted some of the countries top riders many of whom have gone on to professional contracts. Waite Contracts were joined by Paul Hewitt, one of the country's best wheel builders, in 2003 sponsoring the club. Paul has an enviable reputation for supplying top quality touring and race frames as well as superb hand built wheels. Hewitt cycles can supply frames from Colnago, Litespeed, Airborne, De Rosa, Ridley as well as Hewitt frames. Paul has been the centre of many awards, just check out the Awards Link on his website

Sara Whelan (Eastern Velo) led from the gun taking with her Rusine Airstone (VC St Raphael) close on her wheel, followed by relative novice Noel James (Ipswich BC). Sara kept the pressure on the front, leading by example, as the bell was rung Noel was just of the pace of the riders. Rusine kicked on the back straight and as they approached the second to last corner Sara held the inside line with Rusine close on her right shoulder. Sara kicked into the bend but Rusine had no replay and Sara Whelan led into the finishing straight to win her first national championship medal and jersey.
